What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, is a federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States, , specifically commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. It is a celebration of emancipation and African American culture, and a day for reflection, education, and community, often marked by barbecues, parades, and educational events.
It has become widely known thanks to the hard work, dedication, and advocacy of the late Opal Lee, who led celebrations in Texas and walked from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C. to advocate for Juneteenth to become a nationally recognized holiday. On June 17, 2021., President Joe Biden signed it into law. Over the course of her trip, she covered approximately 1,400 miles, often doing 2.5-mile walks to symbolize the two-and-a-half years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Galveston.
Why it’s Important to Our Community?
Our annual event celebrates freedom, culture, and community, and is an event that unites the community through music, vendors, youth activities, and cultural experiences. Through this initiative, we are able to educate, foster cultural awareness and acceptance, support local businesses, and bring hundreds of people together for a peaceful celebration with those who may have never sat at the same table.
